The Public Assistance Department of the Wiltshire County Council took on the duties of the Union/Guardians Committees and the management of the workhouses from 1929.
Many of the records listed here continue the business of the Union Committees without a break. See H1 to H19 for Union records.
In 1948 the Public Assistance Committee and Department [see also F1/100/31, F1/200, F2/1000/1ff] ceased to exist and the management of the institutions was devolved upon the Wiltshire County Council Welfare Committee and Department [see F1/100/42, F1/200/42, F2/1300/1ff and F17/100/1ff].
