Born 22 November 1868 at Helston, Cornwall of John Holland and Grace Treloar Roberts. Educated at Royal College of Science London Associate 1st Class with Honours in 1888, Berkeley Fellow, Owens College Manchester 1889. Married Frances Maud Chapman daughter of Charles Chapman, Deputy Commissioner in Oudh, 23 December 1896 (died 1942). Had one son - Major General John F C Holland and one daughter Margaretta, widow of Colonel A G Shea. Married Helen Ethleen, daughter of Frank Verrall, of Bramley, near Guildford, in 1946 with whom he took a house in Surbiton in Surrey, who survived him and was, in 1948 until 1954, an active member of Surrey County Council. Awarded KCIE for scientific services 1908; KCSI for war services 1918. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society 5 May 1904 Portrait by John Collier hangs in rooms of Asiatic Society of Bengal, Calcutta; and one by Stanley Cursiter at the University of Edinburgh.
