Administrative / biographical background

Union Lodge No. 293/260 [Ancients] was granted its warrant on 26 January 1796 and was named in 1804. The lodge met at a large number of venues in Manchester during its working life; these were as follows. The Bull's Head, Bank Top from 1796, the Duke of York, Green Street from 1799, the Bay Malton, Cockpit Hill from 1801, the White Hart, Sugar Lane from 1804, The Angel, Deansgate in 1806, Robin Hood, New Cross from 1806, the Edinburgh Castle, Blossom Street from 1810, the Earl Howe, Bengal Street from 1811, the Crown and Anchor, Port Street from 1813, the Lord Nelson, Thorneybrow from 1816, the Weavers' Arms, Lee Street from 1818, the Clock Face, Oldham Road from 1823, the Duke of Cumberland, Cumberland Street from 1825, the Saddle Inn, Blackfriars Street, Salford from 1829, the Legs of Man, Portland Street from 1832 and finally, the Black Lion, Chapel Street, Salford from 1833. The

lodge also went though several re-numerations during its existence. These were; No. 296, when established, 377 in 1814 and 260 in 1832. The lodge was erased on 1 June 1836.
