Pursuant to 22 & 23 Chas II, c.22 (1670-1671), the clerk of the peace made lists in duplicate caled 'estreats' or extracts, of fines due and recognizances forfeited, one copy for the sheriff and the other for the Exchequer to which the sheriff had to account for sums collected. The 'sheriffs' returns are the former copies returned with an endorsement certifying the sums he has been able to levy, and why others are not forthcoming
