Administrative / biographical background

The donor's father, John Knowles Priestley (born 24 December 1885) was one of 7 sons and 4 daughters born to Mr. and Mrs. William Priestley of Ince. William Priestley worked for 43 years at the Westwood Sewage Works, retiring as general foreman. On leaving school John worked for 6 months at Parkes Engineering Works, but didn't like it and ran away to join the army. He was bought out by his uncle and then went to work on the railways. In January 1908 John married Sarah Yates (born 23 April 1885) who then worked as a domestic servant for the Layland family at The Mount, Appley Bridge. Sarah was one of 10 children born to Thomas Yates who worked on the railways. The Yates family came from Appley Bridge. John and Sarah had 4 children: William (born 1909), Mary (born 1913), Thomas (born 1919) and Elizabeth (born 1922). After their marriage they settled in Openshaw.
