Ms journal in five notebooks, with ts transcription (247pp), commenced during his captivity in Germany and giving a detailed and highly readable account of his service as a signaller in the 2/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters in Algeria from May until September 1943, participation in the landings at Salerno and operations on the Volturno river during which he was taken prisoner in October 1943, and his subsequent captivity in Germany, mainly employed in a machine factory in Halle where he experienced the air raids on the town in early 1945, concluding with the liberation of the prisoners by American troops in April 1945; also several photographs taken in Halle before and after the bombing.
