Letter from F Erichsen Davies, Major & CO 20 MGC 15/10/1917 "your son was wounded on the morning of the 5th October while in charge of his section. He was seriously but not dangerously wounded in the face, his jaw being broken, and hit in the arm. His servant accompanied him to the last station just before the final dressing station and to the best of my belief he got there safely and then into a motor ambulance. I should certainly have heard that he had been killed on the last bit down. I am sure that he is quite alright in hospital somewhere and possibly he cannot write himself. He did very well indeed in the fight and I specially mentioned the excellent work he did in my official report of the battle. I expect by this time you will have heard from him and your anxiety allayed, I will write again as soon as I hear anything this end.
Letter from F Erichsen Davies 21/10/1917: " I have have been making most exhaustive enquiries re your son and can find no trace of him at present. However I can find no trace of him being killed and I went today to see the 2 Padres who have been burying the dea on the battlefield and he certainly wasn't killed on the last bit down when we lost trace of him. When he left the ADS he was quite comfortable and able to shake hands with Capt Springfield,220 Coy MGC whom he knew well. I feel convinced that he got into an Australian Ambulance like many others of my men and I expect by this you will have heard from him yourself."
Letter to War Office 10/6/1918 from father: "I beg to state that we have heard no information regarding my son 2/Lt JT Anderson 20 MGC, wounded and msg 5/10/1917 later than a letter from Capt Springfield which was forwarded to you stating that he was last seen in the hands of RAMC in a pillbox NW of Polygon Wood and that there was no doubt but that he had been hit again, as there was no possibility of his being a prisoner in the position in which he was. Yrs faithfully JG Anderson.
