The medieval house of Fanhams Hall was rebuilt in 1715 and again in 1901 when it was substantially enlarged. It was purchased in 1822 by Samuel Adams the banker of Ware (much of DE/X613/T1 relates to that conveyance) who was declared bankrupt in 1856. Henry Page, the Ware maltster, purchased the property in 1859, and his family (Anne Croft was Henry Page's daughter and heir DE/X613/T1/50, 51) owned it until December 1950 when it was sold to the National Westminster Bank who used it until the early 1970s as a staff-training college. Since then it has been occupied by the Building Societies Staff College and at present by J Sainsbury plc who, again, use it for training staff.
