Bound volume containing ts transcriptions of his letters and diaries and other documents covering his service during the South African War as a staff officer, October 1899 - October 1900, in which capacity he was present during the siege of Ladysmith, and as commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, February - April 1902, together with a related volume of maps and four volumes of original documents relating to operations in 1899 - 1900; appointment diaries, with infrequent comments, covering his command of the 2nd Division, January - July 1914, and his appointments as Chief of the General Staff, BEF, August 1914 - January 1915, as Deputy Chief of the Imperial General Staff, February - September 1915, as CIGS, October - December 1915, as GOC Egypt, December 1915 - June 1917, and as GOC Aldershot, October 1917 - December 1919; a number of bound volumes and files of high level official records concerning his service as CIGS, GOC Egypt and Chairman of War Office Committees between 1919 and 1922 on the organisation of the post-war Army, dress, unit titles and designations, 1914 - 1918 War battle honours and clasps; private correspondence during the First World War with French and especially Robertson and afterwards with Allenby, Hamilton and Maxse, mostly about his dismissal as French's CIGS in January 1915 and his conduct of operations as GOC Egypt; post-war lectures on the Battle of the Marne and operations in Egypt, 1916 - 1917; miscellaneous private correspondence, 1928 - 1944; and the war diary of the Anti-Tank Company (2nd Brigade, 1st Division) BEF, May - June 1940, in which his son served.
