Description

Annual returns giving names, professions and residence of members of the Sea Captains Lodge [Moderns] and general correspondence relating to the running of the lodge. Years 1769, 1771, 1774, 1777 - 1780 are not extant.

Administrative / biographical background

The Sea Captains' Lodge was named and established in 1782 and met at the Three Tuns, Corn Street, Bristol. [This lodge is a continuation of No. 229 of 1753, erased in 1778, which also met at the Three Tuns. The lodge continued working and in 1782 there is a note of payment for the "Renewal of Constitution".] In 1784 the lodge moved to the Bush Tavern, Corn Street, Bristol. In 1788 the lodge united with the Lodge of Hospitality, No. 296, of the George Inn, Castle Street, Bristol and became the Lodge of Hospitality, meeting at the Bush Tavern, Corn Street. In 1805 the Lodge was renamed the Old Sea Captains' Lodge of Hospitality and in 1814 it was renamed again, becoming the Royal Sussex Lodge of Hospitality. The Royal Sussex Lodge of Hospitality No. 187 now meets at Freemasons' Hall, Park Street, Bristol.
