Administrative / biographical background

In 1834 James Foster of Ilkeston was convicted of stealing a silver watch and sentenced to seven years' transportation. He sailed in 1835 and arrived in Australia in early 1836. He wrote to his parents in Ilkeston in 1841, when his sentence was nearly complete, giving some information on his time in Australia and his plans for the future. He hoped his family would come to Australia. In the event the family stayed in Ilkeston and James Foster's letter passed to his half-sister and her descendants.
