Administrative / biographical background

Mr. Cass was born in Patricroft in 1897, his father Silas Cass, was a joiner. Both Mr. Cass's parents, Silas and Mary Emily (nee Hanson) were from the area. The donor had only one brother Cecil. He was educated at Green Lane School which he left at 14 years. Mr. Cass worked as a sampler at Lancashire Steel, Irlam. During the First World War he was in the Navy, an experience he did not enjoy.

Mr. Cass's wife Marianne, nee Baxter, was born in 1894. She was one of a family of four sisters and five brothers. The Baxter family home, 789 Liverpool Road, was later purchased by the donor and his wife. His wife was a dressmaker prior to her marriage. The couple had two children, Olga and Gordon. Olga was a professional model and now has a hairdressing salon, her husband is a draughtsman. She has two children. Gordon Cass is unmarried and lives with his father.
