RCP/LEGAC/2405/11. Statement calling attention of College to the conduct of Dr. Heywood Smith in medically examining Eliza Armstrong without parents' consent; and expressing hope the College would take cognizance of the admissions made by Heywood Smith and reported in the Press. [1885].

RCP/LEGAC/2405/12. Dr. William Squire. Manuscript letter to Henry Pitman asking him to call the attention of the Council to the case of Heywood Smith and asking whether, as a Member of the College, he could not be called upon to explain the professional grounds upon which he had acted. 4 Nov. 1885.

RCP/LEGAC/2405/13. Sir William Jenner. Manuscript letter to Henry Pitman drawing his attention to paragraphs in the Judges' summing up the evidence in the Eliza Armstrong abduction case; and asking whether the matter should be considered by the Censors' Board or whether some outsider should bring the matter before the Censors' Board. 8 Nov. 1885.

Cuffe, Treasury, copy of letter to Field Roscoe & Co. stating that if Censors' Board required a certified copy of the evidence given by Dr. Heywood Smith and of any other evidence relating to the case, he was enable to give it; but the complete evidence would be found in the Central Criminal Court Sessions Papers; that he was sending a complete copy of newspaper reports, & a transcript of the short hand notes of the Evidence required for the Judge's summing up; and that this should be sufficient to put the College in full possession of the Facts. 18 Nov. 1885.

RCP/LEGAC/2405/15. Henry Roscoe. Manuscript letter to Sir Henry Pitman stating he would send him the short hand notes and they would not be certified or strictly official although they came from the Solicitor to the Treasury. 20 Nov. 1885.

RCP/LEGAC/2405/16. Henry Roscoe. Manuscript letter to Henry Pitman enclosing letter from Treasury and papers giving substance of the case and offering to get him a print of the Central Criminal Court Sessions papers; stating that while the Bye-Laws clearly provided for the exclusion of a Member, there seemed no provision for re-admitting him later. 21 Nov. 1885.

Manuscript letter to Henry Pitman stating his client Heywood Smith had sent him a copy of his Summons to attend Meeting of Censors' Board, and suggesting that since their decision would affect his client's whole future, he ought to be given professional assistance. 24 Nov. 1885.

Manuscript letter to Henry Pitman stating that he had assured Heywood Smith that he would receive perfectly impartial treatment at the hands of the Censors' Board, and that it would be better for his client if he, his solicitor, did not attend the meeting. 30 Nov. 1885.

RCP/LEGAC/2405/22. Henry Pitman. Copy of Manuscript letter to Heywood Smith sending him copy of questions put to him at the Meeting of President and Censors, and requesting he would furnish his answers in writing. 3 Dec. 1884 [1885?]

Manuscript letter to Henry Pitman stating he had advised Heywood Smith on the questions put to him by the President and Censors; stating he hoped the Censors would take no step, other than a reprimand, before he had the opportunity, of meeting them. 4 Dec. 1885.

RCP/LEGAC/2405/24. Henry Roscoe. Manuscript letter to Henry Pitman informing him the Attorney-General would let them have his Opinion on the point put to him in time for the proposed meeting. 9 Dec. 1885.

RCP/LEGAC/2405/26. Sir Henry Pitman. Copy of Manuscript letter to James Girdlestone informing him Heywood Smith had received a Summons to attend the College when the Report of the President and Censors would be presented, and would have the opportunity of making any explanation he wished. 11 Dec. 1885.

Manuscript letter to Heywood Smith requesting his presence at the College when the Report of the President and Censors would be presented; stating he would have the opportunity to make a further statement; and enclosing copy of President & Censors' Report and statement made to them when he appeared before them. (Copy) 11 Dec. 1885

Manuscript letter to Henry Pitman informing him he had advised Heywood Smith to appear by himself before the College and adhere to the statements he had already sent in; and requesting that in the event of a motion to remove Heywood Smith's Membership being made, the matter should be adjourned, to enable him to make an appeal to the College on his behalf. 15 Dec. 1885.

RCP/LEGAC/2405/30. Sir Henry Pitman. Manuscript letter to Henry Roscoe informing him the College had decided to reprimand, and enclosing copies of Resolution and Reprimand. 18 Dec. 1885.

RCP/LEGAC/2405/31. Henry Roscoe. Manuscript letter to Henry Pitman stating that he was of the opinion that the College could publish the papers re William Skinners' case i.e. the Resolution and "Reprimand" passed by the College; that it was unlikely that Dr. Heywood Smith having admitted his fault and escaped expulsion from the College would bring an action for libel; that if he did the College had a defence in the fact that his conduct was notorious and few would justify it, and this, coupled with his confession, would make it almost impossible for him to succeed. 19 Dec. 1885.

RCP/LEGAC/2405/32. Henry Pitman. Copy of Manuscript letter to Heywood Smith, forwarding a copy of the Reprimand addressed to him by the President at the request of the Fellows, as expressed in the Resolution; and stating that these two documents together with the statement he submitted to the President and Censors had been forwarded to every Fellow of the College and to the four English Medical Journals. 22 Dec. 1885.
