Title
Survey of the manor and lordships of Hurstpierpoint, Danny and Hurst Parks in Hurstpierpoint, Cuckfield and All Hallows in Lewes; the manor and lordship of Newyck in Newick, the manor and lordship of Streate in Streat, Chailey, Lindfield, [West] Hoathly, Ardingly, Wivelsfield, Brumpton and Plumpton, late part of the possessions of Gregory Fynes, Lord Dacres, and now of George Gorynge of Lewes, esq.
Date
Feb. and Mar. 1582
Description

Taken by Thomas Jeames, servant to Thomas Wyseman, esq. with George Gorynge and many farmers and tenants of the manors.

This and the two following surveys were compiled at the time of George Goring's purchase of the manors, evidently with a view to exploitation. Estimates of how many loads of wood could be obtained from each plot and the price for which they could be sold are given. and houses are described variously as, for example, 'a pretty cottage newlye builte' and 'an olde tenemente in decaye'. The surveys are moreover remarkable for their detail. Names of occupiers, farmers, tenents, rents, heriots, the acreage, and field names are included as well as a room by room description of the manor house of Hurstpierpoint which is called 'a convenyente house meete for a gentleman of resonable callinge'. Compare the survey of Hurstpierpoint dated 1571, in S.A C., Vol. XI, pp. 65, 66.
