Description

22nd Jan. 1868. Printed notice of Conditions upon which persons will be permitted to ride horses on the inner course of the Roodee.

20th Feb. 1868. S. L. Fennick (Chief Constable), to Mr. Paul, stating that there was no Police Constable at the park last Sunday becuase the Serjeant had overlooked the order until he found it in the evening.

11th March 1868. Printed circular from a Committee appointed by the Parishioners of Harrow-on-the-Hill to watch the progress of the "Public Schools Bill" now before the House of Commons, calling attention to the subject of Foundation rights arising out of the Wills of Founders, asking for co-operation.

14th April, 1868. Th. Milar(?) from 26 Pepper St., to Mr. Jas. Paul, stating that it will be quite right for Mr. Warrington to have his share of the Cattle Plate. His name must have been left off the list by mistake.

15th April 1868. John Douglas (Architect) from 6 Abbey Square. He has just been through the Public Park (Grosvenor Park) and is sorry to see such a frightful standard adopted to support the seats - in all 24 serpents, the most hateful reptile human beings can look at, used in the most impractical manner. P.S. Rather than such seats should have been adopted he would have given the seats himself.

1st Aug. 1868. Jno. Clark, from Wrexham, to Jno.Walker, Esq., Town Clerk, stating that they have agreed for a considerable time that some better arrangement is desirable as to Chester and Wrexham Fairs. Wrexham Fair days are fixed for the Thursday following Oswestry on the first Wednesday in every month. The Chester Fairs appear to be arranged annually, excepting July 5 & Oct.10, but are invariably fixed on a Thursday which is always the market day at Wrexham and sometimes Fair days - being so frequently at each place, he believes he can speak as to the inconvenience of agriculturists and others and asks that the matter be adjusted. Enclosing:-

His printed business card.

11th Aug. 1868. Jno. Mallinson, from Lords Chambers, Corporation Street, Manchester, to John Walker, Esq., Town Clerk, concerning the difficulties of limiting the number of persons using the Suspension Bridge across the Dee to Queen's Park, with reference to the report of Messrs. Johnson & Davies and the state of the bridge.

15th Aug. 1868. Jno. Mallinson, from Lords Chambers, Corporation Street, Manchester, to John Walker, Esq., Town Clerk. He has received the reply of the Deputy Town Clerk to his former letter and, by the same post received a letter from Mr. Johnson, the engineer, stating that within a few days he will send a sketch showing how he proposed to carry out the suggestions he made in conjunction with the Town Surveyor and also the cost of the alteration. It is unlikely that the repairs can be settled by the day of the Regatta, and he trusts the Police will continue to aid their man in preventing any catastrophe, beyond the caution which he understands is placarded upon the bridge. If Walker is right re the stipulations as to repairs, etc, when the bridge was erected, a most foolish agreement appears to have been made on the part of the owners thereof.

17th Oct.1868. John Stead, from Eccleston Nursery, to Mr. Paul, correcting his former invoice.
