Description (What the record is about)
-
The Rushden estate, whose mansion is now called Julians, included virtually the whole parish and extended into Wallington, Clothall, Cottered, Sandon and the 'hamlet' of Broadfield. It was broken up after the first World War by sales in 1919 and 1923 and its attractive cottages made it a favoured residential district.
Documents relating to Thomas Stanley (1625-1678) scholar and poet, are found in the deeds of the vanished mansion of Cumberlow Green, where he was probably born.
Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) the novelist was grandson of the Rector and great nephew of the Squire, Adolphus Meetkerke, to whom for many years his father was heir apparent

Custodial history (Describes where and how the record has been held from creation to transfer to The National Archives)
-
Some deeds were handed to the various sub-purchasers, often not relating to the property they had bought; the remainder, retained by the Company which had resold the estate, were transferred to the County Record Office at the request of the late Oswald Austin, through the good offices of The Misses Spender, who included their own deeds (Accessions 605/6).
Meanwhile Mr J D Walker had given a bundle of old deeds relating mainly, but not exclusively, to Friars Farm, Rushden (Accession 454) and when Mr T A Rowley left Southern Green Farm, Rushden, he allowed the County Record Office to have the large estate map which had hung in his cowshed for many years (Accession 779). (DE/Ru/74776A)
The deeds thus reunited have been catalogued as a unit and in spite of some gaps, record the history of a very picturesque village, from the sixteenth century
