A commsn in 13 HLI in Oct 1915, subs att MGC. Trained at Grantham;ret France Oct 1916 and was KIA at Oppy Wood 28/6/1917 whilst leading his men into a captured German trench. A brother officer wrote…" You may well be proud of your husband;he was always fearless, loved by his men and popular among the whole Division. He was a fine officer and always did his work well. We all miss him more than I can say" and another…" He was always so bright and cheery and ready to do more than his share of the work, that he was loved and admired by everyone I've never seen men so upset as his section is about it. He was buried at dead of night,where fell- a fitting place for such a warrior". Another wrote…"Bernard would would go out in his usual cheery way, we all knew he couldn't be anything else;many will miss him, none do moreso than his own men who have had the good fortune to have him command them". He married at Wishaw 14/8/16, Ethel Margaret, y. daughter of T Swinnerton, of Wishaw.

Lieut. BERNARD ST. GEORGE HAMILTON,
13th Highland Light Infantry, was the son of the Rev. J. M. Hamilton, of Halifax, and was born in 1891. He was elected to a King’s Scholarship in 1906, and entered the Second Master’s House in September of that year. He left at Easter, 1908, and after matriculating at London University, he then took a Commercial Course at Halifax Technical College, passing the examinations of the London Chamber of Commerce and gaining distinction in five subjects. He entered the Civil Service in 1912, and while in Glasgow in 1913 joined the Glasgow Highlanders (Territorial Force), with which Unit he mobilised and went to France in October, 1914. Early in 1915 he was invalided, but he rejoined bis Regiment in July. In October, 1915, he was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 13th Highland Light infantry, and after training at Glasgow and Grantham returned to France in October, 1916, where he was posteil to the 15th Machine Gun Company. With this Unit he went through the Battle of Arras, and was with the Canadians at the capture of Vimy Ridge. In May, 1917, he was promoted Lieutenant. He was killed on the 28th June, 1917, whilst leading his men through a barrage to a captured German trench north of Oppy Wood.(Source not known);Other Notes: HAMILTON, Lieutenant, BERNARD St GEORGE, 15th Coy.
