The Bristol Dock Company was formed in 1803 under an Act for improving the port and harbour of Bristol. Under the Bristol Dock Act, 1848 Bristol Corporation purchased the Bristol City Docks. The purchase of Avonmouth and Portishead docks followed towards the end of the 19th century.
In 1991 First Corporation Shipping Limited took over the port of Bristol on a 150 year lease and renamed it The Bristol Port Company.
