MAPS AND APPORTIONMENTS

This series contains tithe maps and apportionments dating mostly between 1837 and 1851, which were drawn up to assess how much should be paid by each landowner to the parish church and incumbent usually the vicar or rector under the Tithe Act 1836.

The maps, though variable in quality, are often highly detailed and large scale. Few are printed. Many provide the surveyor's name. The boundaries shown usually correspond with physical field or plot layout in the parish, although on some maps the boundaries mark the full extent of one landowner's property. Each plot or field is numbered. Many will show hedges, fences, gates, streams, canals, ditches, drains, lakes and ponds, roads and paths. Variations in woodland, heath, commons, and marsh may be shown. Inhabited houses are characteristically tinted red. A few maps are fully coloured to distinguish tithe-free land, various properties or different land use.

The apportionments were designed to accompany the tithe map and provide detailed listings or schedules for each plot number shown on the maps. For each plot they not only list both landowners and occupiers and the amount of any rent they had to pay, but also provide a description of the land including field names, acreage and land use. The apportionment usually has a summary of the schedule alphabetically listing landowners with the names of the occupiers of their various holdings, total acreage and rentcharges.
