William Thompson, originally a brickmaker, turned to the haulage business in the 1920s, conducting charabanc trips at weekends. Preston trade directories show him as a taxi and charabanc proprietor and haulage contractor of 34 Shelley Road in 1922; he had moved to Wetherall Street by 1926. After his death in August 1941 his son Thomas took over the business; on his death in 1961 he was succeeded in turn by his son Tony.
At some stage known as Blue Bird Motors, the firm became a limited company as T Thompson Preston Ltd in May 1963, and operated from the Progress Garage, Wetherall Street, Preston. In 1971 the firm bought Ainsworth and Martin, another general hauliers (mainly of cotton) established in the 1920s, who continued to operate from Maitland Street though the registered office was at Progress Garage.
