The Cooper Art Gallery was opened on 31 July 1914 to house the pictures and statuary bequeathed to the first Trustees by Samuel Joshua Cooper of Mount Vernon, near Barnsley. In 1933 Sir Michael Sadler presented a collection of pictures and in 1934 the Fox Wing was built to house the Fox collection. In 1977 the Trustees leased the Gallery to South Yorkshire County Council and in 1978 the Addy Bequest was received
