Description

This second deposit of Yarlington Estate documents was made after the death of Roger Wright Rogers, last tenant-for-life of the Yarlington trust estates.

As with the earlier deposit, the collection chiefly consists of deeds of title, the largest element relating to the manor of Woolston from the date of its purchase in 1858 by T. E. Rogers. In addition, there are deeds of title to the manors of Yarlington, and Galhampton and Foxcombe, to land purchased at Bratton Seymour in 1862, and to other small properties acquired at various times.

Most of the estate descended, according to the provisions of the will of John Rogers, to Thomas Englesby Rogers. By a family settlement of 1902, the property was conveyed on trust to the use of Herbert Edwin Wright, nephew by marriage of T. E. Rogers, as tenant-for-life, and on his death was held by his wife Ellen Maud Bickley Wright Rogers (the family having taken the surname Rogers in 1914). After the death in 1961 of her son Roger Wright Rogers, the estate was sold by trustees, and much of the proceeds used to endow prizes and scholarships in the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

No arrangement was evident in the original bundling, and the documents have been grouped as seemed appropriate in 3 sections, relating to deeds of title (1-7), legal and family papers (8-12), and estate administration (13).

T. E. Rogers, Barrister-at-Law, was Deputy Chairman of Quarter Sessions for Somerset, 1870-92, and Chancellor of the diocese of Bath and Wells, 1884-1903. Evidence of his activities will be found in both classes of record, but particularly in the series of faculty papers (ref. D\D\Cf) among the diocesan records for the period concerned.
