On abolition of South Yorkshire County Council on 31 March 1986, the records passed from South Yorkshire County Record Office, by agreement of the four South Yorkshire District Councils, to the custody of Sheffield Archives as lead authority. They were then transferred to Rotherham Archives

According to the notes SY/651/N1/1 below, there were Independents in Swinton from 1779. The Religious Census of 1851 states that the Independents' church was built in 1822 with seating for 150 and an average congregation of 40. In 1872 the Rev. Samuel Jackson became minister for Swinton church and 1874 a fund was set up to build a new Congregational Church. In 1884 a School Room and Lecture Hall were opened, the former being used for worship until sufficient money had been raised to build a church. The first services were held in the new church in August 1901
