The Gunnings were an Irish family. Sir Robert Gunning (d.1816) was a diplomat and served as a minister in Denmark 1765-1771, in Prussia in 1771 and in Russia 1772-1775. He was rewarded with a baronetcy in 1778 and purchased the Horton estate in 1781. It had belonged to a branch of the Montagus who had held the Earldom of Halifax for two generations. The 2nd Earl of Halifax (d.1771) was a politician, serving as a Secretary of State, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and First Lord of the Admiralty. The Gunnings stayed at Horton Hall until 1888 when the 5th Baronet sold it to Pickering Phipps, the brewer. Later it was sold to George Winterbottom. The mansion was unfortunately demolished in 1936.
