Description

Volumes LMA/4459/K/02/001-LMA/4459/K/02/003 principally contain letters sent to the Institution and addressed to its honourary secretary, Reverend Laing, between 1845 and 1849.

The volumes are a rich source of information about the aims and history of the Institution as well as the role and living conditions of the Victorian governess in general. Correspondence touches on the administration of the Institution and its homes, legacies and subscriptions granted to the Institution, candidature for annuity election, and the employment and retirement of governesses. As well as correspondence, a miscellany of other papers have been pasted into the volumes including printed advertisements, newspaper cuttings, financial notes and agendas for meetings.

Volumes LMA/4459/K/02/004-LMA/4459/K/02/005 contain correspondence and papers relating to more specific themes, namely the Institution's Provident Fund and the celebration of its centenary year.
