These documents relate to the administration of the Batsford estate during the lifetime of Algernon Bertram Freeman Mitford, (1837-1916), created Baron Redesdale of Redesdale, Northumberland in 1902. In addition to title deeds, leases and tenancy agreements, there are a significant number of documents concerning the large scale improvements carried out to the estate by A B Freeman Mitford between 1888 and 1903. There is one item (D7406/4/1) which relates solely to property in Northumberland belonging to A B Freeman Mitford's father

The documents in this collection originally formed part of the main Batsford estate archive, but at some point became separated. It is not known when or why this happened; staff at the Batsford Estate Office thought that it might have occurred during Lord Redesdale's ownership of the estate, before its purchase by Sir Gilbert Wills
