Administrative / biographical background

St Martin's Barnehurst began as a mission to the people of the newly built suburb of Barnehurst around 1932. In 1935 an appeal was launched by the Bishop of Rochester, the Right Reverend Martin Linton Smith to construct a permanent building. The necessary funds were raised and the Bishop was able to consecrate the new church two years later. The name of St Martin was chosen as a mark of gratitude for Bishop Smith's efforts. Within the course of 1937 St Martin's, Barnehurst was constituted a Chapel of Ease within the Parish of Christchurch, Bexleyheath before being erected into a parish in its own right, a process that culminated in the instalment of the first Vicar in November that year.

The church flourished and plans for an extension to the church were drawn up in 1968. The work was completed and the new section dedicated in 1971.
