Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)
-
The estate was bequeathed by John Mittell, esq, to his daughter Elizabeth by his will of 11 Apr 1734, proved in PCC in December 1734 (PRO PROB 11/668, s268). In about 1740 she married Charles Browne; for correspondence between their solicitor Francis Austen of Cliffords Inn and Sevenoaks in Kent and John Collier, steward of the manor of Foxhunt in Waldron, concerning a resettlement of the estate after the marriage, 1741, see PAR 361 7/1/5-12.
Broomfield and the Tanyard must have been allotted by the partition to Henry Johnson. He died in 1798 and the property descended to his son Henry Johnson, on whose bankruptcy it was sold to his relative William Balcombe Langridge, the clerk of the peace in 1819. For detailed papers concerning the farm, 1797-1850, see AMS 5706/11, 12. For a map of the farm, 1819, see LAN 305.
