Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume K2 is the second in the series of four 'K' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Ely, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Smith & Watkins, Messrs. Pickering & Smith and Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the Ely Bishoprick Estates, which were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 7 January 1864 by vacancy. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Ely Episcopal Estates were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 1 May 1874 (effective date) and published in the London Gazette on 11 August 1874 by an Order in Council. These estates were then later transferred back to the Church Commissioners as Bishopric Late Permanent Estates (under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943) on 1 January 1955 (effective date), published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 18 February 1955. ; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Cambridge, parishes of Chatteris, Comberton, Downham, Ely St. Mary, Ely St. Mary & Holy Trinity, Elm, Fordham, Grunty Fen (extra parochial), Landbeach, Madingley, Newton (Isle of Ely), Stretham, Waterbeach, Wishbeck St. Mary and Wishbeck St. Peter; the county of Norfolk, parishes of East Walton, Griston, Hunstanton, Kenninghall, Roughton, Runham, Stanford, Thompson, Turrington, Watton and West Dereham; the county of Suffolk, parishes of Cratfield, Fressingfield, Linstead Magna, Linstead Parva, Mendham, Metfield, Southelmham and Weybread; the county of Leicestershire, parishes of Gaddesby, Melton Mowbray and Queeniborough; the county of Hertdordshire, parish of Codicote; the county of Hertfordshire, parish of St. Albans St. Peter; and the county of Middlesex, parish of Holborn St. Andrew (London).
