Title
Letter from Lady Catherine Ashburnham to Rupert Gunnis
Date
18 Oct 1943
Description

Is glad that Gunnis enjoyed the frivolous and feverish day [at Ashburnham]. If she cannot do anything to help the war, she can at least lighten the weariness felt by a few people. Talks of Gunnis's grim life, and her own privileged one. Has found a dark papier machée bowl with gold on it, which is either Japanese or Chinese, which will be ideal to hold the gold leaves. A letter in 'The Times' has stated that the monuments and churches in Sicily are safe. Imagines that the Greeks, Albanians, Yugo Slavs and Germans are all thirsting for revenge on the Italians, and will only be restrained from cutting their throats by 'us'.
