The Chief Engineer was one of the Corporation's Chief Officers and was answerable to the General Manager and to the Corporation's Board. He planned and managed the development of roads, sewers, drainage, pumping stations, sewage treatment works, bridges, reservoirs, footpaths, and cycleways. He also planned, managed and oversaw the provision of gas, water and electricity to all businesses and residences within Bracknell.
Every proposed new development and alteration to buildings in Bracknell had to be approved by the Chief Engineer and the Chief Architect. The Chief Engineer would submit engineering drawings to the Corporation's Board, devised by the Engineering Department including the Chief Engineer, local authorities and companies, noting if they approved or not.
The Corporation had two Chief Engineer's from 1950-1982: John Taylor Kendal from 1950-1978; and Norman F Batt from 1978-1982. Batt had previously served as Deputy Chief Engineer.
