Administrative / biographical background

An area of undeveloped land bounded by the M6, M61 and A6 was chosen as the first of eight projected major employment areas in the New Town. An application was entered prior to the Outline Plan Inquiry and received approval on 28 Mar. 1974. The site was planned for both advance factories of small starter units known as nursery factories and also for standard factories. There were also a number of fully serviced sites for purpose-built factories, as well as a hotel development. For Information on the attempts to attract industry to this employment area see: NTC 12.

As soon as project planning at Walton Summit was underway plans were made for residential developments nearby. The first was to the southeast of the employment area and was initially called Walton Summit residential development. The name was later changed to Clayton Brook see: NTC 18. Another residential development was planned round a proposed district centre at Whittle-le-Woods but this was renamed Clayton Green see: NTC 20.
