Description (What the record is about)
-
Joan Scruton was one of the pioneers of the Paralympic Movement, She originally worked with Dr Ludwig Guttman at the Spinal Injuries Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. She also held many posts, at various times she was Secretary General of the British Paraplegic Sports Society, the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation and the International Coordinating Committee of World Sports Organisations for the Disabled. She wrote a history of the ICC and also 'Stoke Mandeville: Road to the Paralympics', about the development of the Paralympic movement from its beginnings in the Stoke Mandville Wheelchair Games. She was made an MBE in 1975, and received the Paralympic Order in 1999. These papers are from her personal collection. Due to her many interests when they were received the order was rather confused, they have been sorted but there is still overlap between catagories.
