Custodial history

The records in this group were originally given to the National Museum of Labour History and formed part of a group of London trade union records transferred to the Bishopsgate Institute, form where they were donated to Hackney Archives Department.

Administrative / biographical background

The Hackney Branch of the A.E.U opened in August 1896 with a membership of 31. Meeting originally at the Hare Tavern, Cambridge Heath, it movedto the Adelaide PH on Hackney Road and subsequently to the Lord Stanley PH, Paragon Road. When this was hit by a land mine in 1940, the branch moved twice more before settling on the Pembury Tavern, Amhurst Road, where it met in 1946.
