Custodial history

In 1928 and 1931 Battle Urban District Council, as rating authority, acquired a large proportion of the records of the civil administration of the parish; despite the suggestion in 1934 of W A Raper, Battle solicitor and antiquary, that they be returned to the parish chest, they remained with the local authority and were deposited with the records of Battle RDC (which had absorbed the UDC) on 12 July 1972 (ACC 1513). Many of these documents were listed by ESRO as PAR 236, and remained under that reference until 2005, when they were returned to the records of the local authority with the reference DR.The deans of Battle and the parish charities were represented by the Battle solicitors Raper and Ellman, latterly Raper and Fovargue, and their several deposits at ESRO contain a great deal of material relating to tithes and to the administration of the charities. A major deposit by the dean in 1987 (ACC 4795) has not been listed here as its contents, dating from the 13th century onwards, had only recently been collected from the offices of Raper and Ellman. In the 1960s those offices had also been available to the members of the Battle Historical Society, but it is difficult to establish whether several parish documents deposited by the Society in 1981 (ACCs 2765, 2776 and 2780) had their origins there or at the church. ACC 2780 contained a bundle of records of William Ticehurst, parish clerk and sexton; these have been allocated references within various series (PAR236/2/1/3-4, 29/2, 32/5/1-2, 43/4-5). Several are endorsed 'A G Ticehurst, Bexhill', and may have been passed to the Society by a descendant of their compiler.
