The annual Audit Account, 'a lucid form of estate account', appears to have been introduced by the guardians of Thomas Coke in 1707, and improved in 1711 (R.A.C. Parker, Coke of Norfolk, Oxford 1975, p.6). There are, however, references to earlier audit books, although none has survived.
