Description (What the record is about)
-
Asaf al-Daula (Nawab of Oudh 1775-97) at a cock-fight. The Nawab, in white 'jama' and red trousers, crouches beside an English officer, wearing a red coat and white trousers, watching a cock-fight. Three other European officers stand behind with a number of Indian gentlemen. A servant holds a blue umbrella over the Nawab. A yellow canopy above; baskets for the cocks to left and right. By a Lucknow artist, c.1830-35. Water-colour; 13 by 9.75 ins. Presented by J. Creswell 1929. Note: This painting is similar in style to Add.Or.2599, and probably depicts the famous cockfight between Asaf al-Daula and Colonel Mordaunt which took place at Lucknow in 1786 and was celebrated by John Zoffany. For an engraving of Zoffany's picture by Richard Earlom with its key, see Edwardes (1960), 48.
