Administrative / biographical background

The post of Secretary to the Institution was created in 1845. The Secretary was the chief administrator and office manager, responsible for liaising with the Board and corresponded officially with applicants, subscribers and other institutions. All correspondence sent out by the Institution was signed by the Secretary or on his behalf. The Secretary was assisted by a team of office staff, most notably the Case Secretary who reviewed applications made for annuities.

The post of Secretary, combined that of Director, was still in existence in 2004.
