Born Reading, educated at King Edward VI School, Southampton, 1930-1937, then University College Southampton, 1937-1939; Served in the army 1939-1946; He was wounded in West Germany April 1945 while serving with the 15/19th King?s Royal Hussars and was mentioned in Despatches; subsequently served with Scottish Command in connection with the repatriation of soldiers in Polish army, and in 1946 demobilised; He studied at University College, London 1946-1948, and graduated with a B.A Honours History Class I with the award of a University of London Studentship, and PhD in Russia and Poland, at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies under the supervision of Professor W.J. Rose and then Professor R.R. Betts between 1948-1951; Joined Queen Mary College as a part-time lecturer in 1950, becoming an Assistant Lecturer in 1951; 1953 Lecturer; granted the title of Reader in History with effect in 1962; 1964 Professor of Modern History by conferment of title and in 1965 by appointment; 1967-1970 Dean of the Faculty of Arts; 1977-1979 Governor 1970-1973; 1970-1982 Head of History Department; In 1970 he was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta by the Polish Government and was made an Officer of the Order. Retired 1982.
