INTRODUCTION

This fourth volume of the Catalogue of the Petworth House Archives follows the arrangements of its predecessors. It lists two thousand items, in line with the policy of publishing smaller volumes at more regular intervals, to make material generally available more quickly

The most notable single item listed in this volume must be the 15th century cartulary of Athelney Abbey in Somerset. This volume, which had not been seen since the late 18th century, was found when the Archives were moved from the old Estate Office to new premises in 2000

Of more significance for the history of Petworth House itself are the inventories of the House, and the family's other houses, taken on the deaths of the owners in 1837, 1869 and 1901. The inventories taken on the death of the 3rd Earl of Egremont in 1837 are of particular importance for understanding the arrangement of the collections in the time of this great patron of art, and were extensively used in the research for the "Turner at Petworth" exhibition in 2002

Also of importance for the history of Petworth and its collections are the documents concerning the activities of Gavin Hamilton and Matthew Brettingham in collecting sculpture and other works of art from Italy and elsewhere in the late 1750s to early 1760s. There are also papers concerning the rebuilding of the south end of Petworth House by Anthony Salvin in the 1870s

The extensive estate and household accounts listed in this volume include accounts for work on the House and gardens in 1720s to 1740s. As in previous volumes, London tradesmen supplying goods are listed by name

In round terms, approximately 20% of the Archive is catalogued in the four published volumes of the catalogue and the catalogue produced by the Historical Manuscript Commissioners in 1877, and another 30% under the old estate system, of which there are 29 manuscript volumes of catalogue. Material can be found in the old estate system, and all enquiries should be addressed to West Sussex Record Office
