The Rev William J Wilby graduated from St Catherines College, Cambridge with a BA in 1879. He was a deacon and later a priest at St John's, Birkenhead 1878-1879. He served as Chaplain to the Royal Navy on various ships, including:

Rugby - 1891
Cambridge - 1891-1893
Narcissus - 1893-1894
Endyminion - 1894-1895
St Vincent - 1895-1898
Jupiter - 1898-1900
RNLI Gospoint - 1900-1904
He was appointed vicar of Homerfield with South Elmham St Cross in 1904 and he stayed there until his death in 1927. His will made on 29 August 1894 was proved on 7 April 1927.
