Wesleyan Methodist services were first held in Garden Lane in 1888, when a mission room was established, at which three services were held each week (See Kelly's Directory of Cheshire, 1892, p. 192). A chapel was subsequently built, which for many years was known as the Garden Lane Mission Chapel.
Garden Lane Methodist Church formed part of the St. John Street Methodist Circuit until 1959, when the Circuit amalgamated with Hunter Street Circuit, to form Grosvenor Park Circuit.
The Church is situated in an area of Victorian working class housing, and with the exception of St. John Street Methodist Church, is the last remaining Methodist church in the vicinity of the city centre.
