Description (What the record is about)
-
Letter of John Wilson, Past Master, unnamed Lodge held in the Royal Horse Artillery, Plough Inn, Colchester to Robert Leslie, Grand Secretary, 28 Token House Yard, London seeking registration and membership certificates for new members, Sergeants Charles Cochrane and William Kenyon. Mentions previous letter seeking the registration and certificates for Charles Long, Artificer, James Frazier, Sergeant Major, Thomas Clark, John Hickford and James Gallougher, Artificers and Alexander Grey, joining from Lodge, No. 510, held in 28th Foot Regiment, Gloucestershire, working under the Grand Lodge of Ireland. Reports the death of a member and the necessity for a Lodge of Emergency to discuss Masonic funeral ritual and seeks advice about forming a procession given the regulation passed on 13 July 1753 in Ahiman Rezon, Book of Constitution. As the Lodge was unable to obtain white gloves and aprons in time, members decided to follow the coffin as private friends but several members objected, stating that Masonic funeral processions took place in the Garrison and by Trafalgar Lodge, No. 111 [SN 1441], Colchester. Some members therefore joined the procession wearing aprons and sashes of various colours, of which Wilson did not approve and seeks guidance on this matter from the Grand Secretary.
