Administrative / biographical background

This small collection relates to the Maple Hayes estate near Lichfield. The estate was consolidated by Albert Octavius Worthington between about 1890 and 1930 and many of the documents appear to be redundant deeds relating to properties acquired at that time.

The core of the estate was the Maple Hayes property itself purchased by John Atkinson from Thomas Salt in 1804. Several properties on the estate formerly formed part of the manor of Pipe-cum-Membris and a small number of court rolls and rentals for the Pipe Hall estate were apparently inherited with the deeds. Many relate to the period when the Pipe estate was in the hands of the Heveningham family.
