Description (What the record is about)
-
; Survey volume DD7 is the last in the series of seven 'DD' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Winchester, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the Winchester Bishoprick Estates, which were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 12 November 1869 by vacancy (vacancy by Order in Council but was not published in the London Gazette).; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the Winchester Episcopal Estates was re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 29 September 1878 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 7 March 1879. These estates were subsequently transferred back to the Church Commissioners as Bishoprick Late Permanent Estates (under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943) on 1 April 1954, which was published in the London Gazette on 23 April 1954 by Order in Council.; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Hampshire, parishes of Crondall, Crawley, Ashmansworth, Chilcombe, Morestead, Milland, Milland Vill; St. Faith, Winnall, Easton, Compton, Twyford, Weeke, Chilbolton, Wonston, King's Somborne, Little Somborne, Waterloo, Catherington, Yateley; the county of Wiltshire, parishes of Downton, Little Hinton, Wanborough and Ham; the county of Berkshire, parishes of Harwell, Brightwell, Cholsey, Sparsholt, Chidrey and Uffington; the county of Oxfordshire, parish of Witney; the county of Somerset, parish of Bishops Hull; and the county of Surrey, parish of Farham, Frensham, and Southwark St. Saviour (London).
