Description

Brown cloth post-bound 'Luxor' photograph album measuring 265 x 300 mm, with title 'Photographs' stamped in gold on front cover. Prints are mounted three or four to a page, with reference code identifying negative number. This reference code consists of a letter of the alphabet for each volume of negatives, and a number for each negative within the volumes. Captions for each photograph can be found both with the list in each negative album, and in two notebooks which duplicate this information. The collection also contained the original nitrate negatives: these have been duplicated onto safety film and the originals destroyed. The original arrangement of twenty books of negatives (coded A–T) has been broken up into a more convenient system which follows and corresponds with the new numbering of the albums themselves: thus the negative number for Photo 19/1 (50) is now ON 19/1 (50) (where ON = Original Negative). A broad and very selective breakdown of the contents includes the following subjects: the Sawbwa of Tawngpeng's daughters (print 2); views at Namhsan (prints 4–5); view of Payagyi (print 6); groups and views at Hinhpak (prints 8–12); (?)monastery at Naungthakaw Chaung (print 15); Gaing-ok (senior abbot) and followers, Naungthakaw Chaung (print 16); Tawhsang Bazaar (print 17); Hkum Haw Yawt, Myosa of Monglong (print 18); Mong Long Bazaar (prints 19–20); Sawbwa of Tawngpeng (print 25); Gaudamas at Mong Tung (print 30); Mong Tung Myosa (prints 31–32); Mong Tun Haw (print 33); Shan pakondans with their loads (prints 35–36); group of Palé tribeswomen at Mong Tung (print 40); European group at Bawgyo 1912 (print 41); river scenes on the Nam Hka, mules and dugouts crossing Panghsang Ferry (prints 44–46); raft of teak logs going down the Kuthai and over waterfall into the Kawnghkam Cave (prints 59–65); Tahom Ferry (print 68); aftermath of landslip at Hsaihkao (prints 69–72); group portraits of hill tribes: Palés, Palaungs, Lihsaws, Ho-Kuns, Kachins (prints 75-84); Palaung groups (prints 89-91); Palé and Palaung groups (100–102); pwes and festivals, (?)Hsipaw (prints 108–15); Namtu Bridge from the east (print 117); Tawhsang Monastery (print 119); tribal groups: Palés, Was, Lus, Kaws (prints 122–35); River Mekong downstream from Paliao (print 127); Kenglap ferry (prints 130–31); Lahu Nat procession, Keng Tung (prints 154–56); views on the Salween (prints 159–61); Monglin Bazaar (print 162).
