Description (What the record is about)
-
From: Henry V, king of England Assize held in the king's court in the presence of William lesyngby and Robert Hulle, justices for assizes in Kent, by a writ between the prior of Canterbury Cathedral Priory [John Wodnesbergh, II] and John Chymbham and Alice his wife and afterwards in the presence of Robert and Thomas Broun', concerning a tenement in Farningham ('Frenyngham'). Held at Dartford 26 Feb 1414. Recites the king's writ to William, Robert and Thomas, instructing them to hold the assize, dated at Westminster 12 Feb 1414, and the assize proceedings. The prior claimed that he has been disseised of a rent of £3, which had not been paid for 5 years. John and Alice, through Stephen Melle their attorney, admitted that they were tenants of a moiety of the manor of Charton ('Cherton'') but alleged that the moiety is outside the prior's fee. Details of other arguments on behalf of the prior. Jurors (named) provided details of ownership of the rent by the prior's predecessors and supported his claim. The judges decided that the prior should receive seisin of the rent and arrears of £17 6s 8d. Exemplified, with the names of the jurors, at the prior's request. Sent patent. The clerk is ardern. Examined by William Aghton and Richard Gabriell', clerks. Given at Westminster [Middlesex]. Witness: John, Duke of Bedford, keeper ('custos') of England Endorsed with description in 15th cent hands.
