The records consist of two major series of numbered plans of canals, equipment and plant, 5465/1-455 and 5465/456-591, a number of smaller series of plans, tracings and annotated Ordnance Survey sheets and several miscellaneous items including the minutes of engineering conferences and sketchbooks of proposed alterations to the canals.

These records were deposited by the Border Counties Waterways section of British Waterways.

They were originally kept at the Ellesmere Canal Depot, originally the central depot of the Ellesmere and Chester Canal Company, later of the Shropshire Union Canal Co. (incorporated in 1846). The Depot undertook maintenance work and constructed and repaired plant and equipment for the whole canal network.
