Battle Rural District Council: building control plans

Plans of buildings to be erected in the parishes of Ashburnham, Brightling, Catsfield, Crowhurst, Dallington, Ewhurst, Hollington Rural, Mountfield, Penhurst, Sedlescombe, Westfield and Whatlington, submitted to the Council for approval via its Sanitary Inspector and Buildings Surveyor

The series seems to start at the date of the appointment of a new officer to this post, though the plans were evidently stored in poor conditions. Many have deteriorated and disappeared. There is no register of plans and until 1930 they have no references. It is possible to trace some, though not all, of the plans in the reports of the Buildings Surveyor in the Council minutes, 1918-1930 (DR/B/9/8-11) and the report book, 1928-1934 (DR/C/6/3) and the references to the plans since 1930 have been pencilled into the latter document. The surviving earlier plans have been given similar references and these are listed below with names of owners and of architects, surveyors or builders when these are recorded

<p>In 1933 the Council and Battle Urban District Council established a joint Town Planning Committee and plans had to be subjected to planning as well as building control approval. For plans approved by the joint Town Planning Committee, 1933-1934 see DR/A/3. Battle Rural District Council's area was enlarged as from April 1934 by the East Sussex Review Order of that year and for plans approved from that date onwards see DR/A/7</p>
