The Union Lodge was established in 1773. In 1773 the meeting place of the lodge in Gateshead, Durham is unknown but by 1779 the lodge was meeting in a private room, Hillgate, Gateshead. The lodge was named the Union Lodge in 1779. In 1817 the lodge meet at the Black Bull Inn, High Street, Gateshead. The lodge united in 1817 with Prince Edwin's Lodge No. 41 [No. 27, Ancients of 1813] also of the Black Bull Inn, Gateshead and became known as the Gateshead Union Lodge. Details of this union appear not to have been passed on to Grand Lodge as both lodges remain on the register until 1827 when they were erased.
